The Sweden Historical Society offers a $2,500 part-time summer internship to qualified college students or rising high school seniors.
The Historical Society is located in the town center of Sweden, Maine (population 420), in southwestern Maine, near the New Hampshire border. It has two buildings: the Center Schoolhouse and a former Blacksmith Shop. The Center Schoolhouse has been renovated and functions as a museum and meeting place.
Over the past five years, numerous documents, letters, maps, and artifacts have been donated to the Sweden Historical Society, requiring cataloging. Applicants must be eager to help organize the Society’s collection, learn and use museum software, assist with event planning, conduct research, lead museum tours, and support general office tasks. The summer’s highlight is Sweden Days, which takes place from August 7 to 10.
The internship is for eight weeks, beginning June 23, although that date is flexible. The work hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 2 pm, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Sweden Days events. The selected candidate is expected to complete the entire eight-week program.
A successful candidate should demonstrate strong organizational skills, computer skills, an ability to work independently, and a strong interest in history and working with the local community. Both local and summer residents are encouraged to apply.
